See Your Food

Recently there has been some media attention around One Pig, the third part of the "One" Trilogy by Matthew Herbert, (to be released on Accidental in September 2010). It will use sampled sounds from the life of a pig reared at a Farm in Kent, slaughtered, and then eaten. Matthew described his thoughts on the project at the outset -

“I wanted to record one human life and make that into a record but it soon became clear that following someone from the cradle to the grave is too difficult. Pigs are animals which humans totally rely on in many different ways, yet systematically abuse, so I felt this would be an excellent representation of a modern life.”

Matthew has also responded to animal rights group PETA in a statement online -

“I'm puzzled and disappointed by PETA's assertions about one pig because this project is in part about dealing head on with the conditions and realities of a modern food industry. As I eat meat, I would have thought PETA would have been pleased that I am confronting the consequences of that choice. Unlike most industrial pig farms, my pig was kept in excellent conditions but was always grown by the farmer for slaughter. My desire to listen in to that entire cycle and represent it as music is not, and never was intended to be cynically repackaged purely as entertainment.”

The "One" Trilogy

This year Matthew Herbert will be releasing a trilogy of albums on Accidental.

The first is One One, which Matthew has written, performed, recorded and produced entirely by himself, to be released in April. One One features Matthew singing for the first time. The result is his most intimate and “honest” musical production since he first performed live at Wishmountain in 1995, using only a pepper pot as an instrument.

The second in the series is One Club, being released in June 2010. The samples used for the album were recorded in their entirety at the Robert Johnson club in Frankfurt, Germany, in September 2009. Matthew turned the microphones on the audience - recording dancing, kissing, laughter, mobile phone rings and a plethora of sounds. He even recorded private conversations and sounds from the toilets.

The One Trilogy concludes with One Pig, released in September 2010, which will use sampled sounds from the life of a pig reared at a Farm in Kent, slaughtered, and then eaten. Initially Matthew had wanted to record one human life but due to the difficulty of that he chose a pig instead - "Pigs are animals which humans totally rely on in many different ways, yet systematically abuse, so I felt this would be an excellent representation of a modern life.”

The Herbert Pig

A project is born...

In 2010 Matthew Herbert will release a record entitled 'The Pig'. It will be made up entirely of sounds made during the life cycle of a pig.

In his first pig-related blog Matthew writes:

"I will be there at its birth,
during its life,
present at its death
and during the butchery process.
Its body will then be given to chefs new and old,
there will be a feast,
it will all be recorded
and then turned in to music.

Meanwhile I await a call from Monkshill Farm in Kent to let me know that my pig is on its way. I will rush there with a camera and a tape recorder".

The Invisible-pre-order Your Copy Now!

The Invisible's eponymous debut is out on March 2nd, but you can pre-order this sonic masterpiece now-click here.

Time Out described The Invisible thus: "they've evolved a light-filled and groovily insistent, electro soul-pop hybrid that recalls Scritti Politti, Talking Heads, Arthur Russell, Bilal, Robert Wyatt, Prince and latter-day Radiohead - possibly unworkable on paper, but in actuality, near perfect. Their sound is sophisticated yet earthy, intelligent but deeply heartfelt, comfortingly familiar yet zingily fresh".

The band are supporting the album by playing a number of live dates, and we wholeheartedly recommend that you get down to one-more details on the band's myspace page.

Nattura

Matthew has been working on a new track with Bjork, Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) and Brian Chippendale (of the wonderful Lightning Bolt) on a new track called Nattura, which is out now on One Little Indian Records.

This explanation is taken from bjork.com:

"The single was composed specifically to encourage active support for the Nattura campaign, which aims at collating and providing sustainable and eco-friendly options suitable for Iceland, and generating alternative ways to utilize it’s natural resources. People will be able to submit their ideas on the website for sustainable green workplaces for Icelanders. According to Björk, “It is now more important than ever before to emphasize a respect for nature…I believe that profits, technological advances and working together with nature can all go hand in hand. None need to be sacrificed at the expense of the others.”

The new single is written and produced by Björk and features Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on backing vocals, Brian Chippendale (Lighting Bolt) on drums, Matthew Herbert on synth/bass, and Mark Bell on additional electronic beats. Opening with a huge elemental swirl, “Nattura” then fires up an incendiary and fierce tribal rhythm. The song sees Björk firmly on the march in celebration of her homeland, in hopes that Icelanders harness its energy in a sustainable way.
For more information on the single and the Nattura Environmental Campaign please visit www.nattura.info or www.bjork.com."

Ica Fusions-herbert Presents New Material

From the ICA website:

Thursday 6 September is an evening of original fusions commissioned by the ICA. Live performances which aim to illustrate the realms of possibility conjured by the integration of music and art. We are lucky to have some of the finest young animators around working alongside key musicians, all of whom are making strides in the contemporary music landscape on their own terms.

Matthew Herbert, master of the found sound and exponent of the more popular side of dance music's avant-garde teams up with promo film-maker Joji Koyama (Woof Wan Bau), director of award-winning promos for Mogwai, Coldcut and Duke Spirit; and several short films including Watermelon Love. Matthew Herbert has thrilled audiences around the world with his off-the-cuff musical style and subversive stance. Anyone who is familiar with his work sampling recipes conjured by Nigella Lawson for the LP Plat Du Jour will know what might be in store.

Next up Alexis Taylor from London and Brian Degraw from New York. Alexis is a musician, songwriter and singer, best known as a member of the pop group, Hot Chip - a band few of us can claim not to be familiar with following their critically acclaimed album The Warning storming the charts. Recently working on a number of side projects most notably with Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, at the ICA we will witness his first first foray into audio-visual experimentation with musician and artist Brian Degraw, founding member of the experimental music group Gang Gang Dance. Brian has exhibited artwork throughout the world and toured extensively with GGD and has also collaborated in the recent past with artists Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, and filmmaker Harmony Korine. We can thus assume that these two guys, no strangers to working in partnerships with others will get nothing short of magical when they work together. Check Brian's Retina Riddim DVD for a hint of this fusions' potential.
Also on the bill is animator and film-maker Max Hattler, a further talent on display at this intriguing evening. Although relatively new to the commercial scene, his personal work is a revelation and Max has promised to pull out all the stops to rise to the occasion at the ICA. His already inspiring work with the band Economy Wolf (he has directed two promos for the band) will come to fruition as both parties perform together live.

Lastly Simon Robson, most known for his work What Barry Says, will be doing something that ties it all together. Watch this space... or better still come down and see for yourself.

Oni-wa Soto! Fuku-wa Uchi! Goodbye Winter! Hallo Spring! Demons Out! Happiness In!

Accidental are proud as punch to tell you all that the eponymous debut from Japanese traditional space funk band, Setsubun Bean Unit, is out this week!
Having conquered Sonar in June, the band have been busy developing their live show which they'll unleash on the UK in an extensive tour later this year. Written by members of Folk outfit Bellowhead, their sound is a heavy amalgam of traditional Japanese bon dance rhythms, dub, electronics and jazz, with the inimitable voice of singer Kamura binding it all together into a heady package, which boomkat described thus : "At times you could almost be forgiven for thinking that Setsubun Bean Unit was a lost progressive jazz LP from the 70s, probably affiliated with Sun Ra or his galactic cohorts, but then it's a little too weird even for that", high praise indeed!

"the oddest pleasure you'll experience all year." [The Independent]

Oni Wa Soto Fuku Wa Uchi!

Accidentals latest signing 'SETSUBUN BEAN UNIT' release their debut album on the 13th August 07.

Born out of a 2005 trip to Tokyo by members of the Farmyard Animals (Gideon Juckes, Brendan Kelly, Pete Flood), sometime Bellowhead compatriots and general intrepid jazz livestock adventurers. Bearing witness to the Japanese festivals of Setsubun (the very lively Spring festival where soya beans are thrown in the air, in order to cast away Demons and bring good luck into the household) and Bon Odori (here, energetic and often bawdy songs are sung over a heavy and hypnotic groove accompanying local folk dancers dressed in Yukata (Summer kimonos), to honour the spirits of dead ancestors), the band decided that this intoxicating amalgam of live bean scattering and heavy dance groove would confound and excite the uninitiated palettes of the West. Thereby combining their jazz, dub and electronic funk with the rhythms and songs of traditional Japanese folk music (played by fellow band members Simon King, Yuki Yamashita, Takuma Kawauchiya and singer Kamura) and driven by the energy of the Bon dancers (Kay Oishi and Akiko Sato), a new sight and sound has been born which is quite unlike anything you’ve heard. Kudoro meets Konono. No. 1 in downtown Tokyo, whilst Miles Davis plays in the background.
