Technical Hitch

Unfortunately due to technical hitches at the ICA last night, Matthew Herbert's and Joji Koyama's collaboration could not be screened; the ICA's staff worked hell for leather but could not resolve the technical issues with their equipment, and decided it best to end the night there, with the intention of re-screening the work in the near future. The ICA is issuing an apology and advises anyone dissatisfied with the evening to contact their box office for a refund. In the meantime we are going to be streaming the videos here on the Accidental site from early next week so please check back then for the audio-visual extravaganza!

Ica Fusions-herbert Presents New Material

From the ICA website:

Thursday 6 September is an evening of original fusions commissioned by the ICA. Live performances which aim to illustrate the realms of possibility conjured by the integration of music and art. We are lucky to have some of the finest young animators around working alongside key musicians, all of whom are making strides in the contemporary music landscape on their own terms.

Matthew Herbert, master of the found sound and exponent of the more popular side of dance music's avant-garde teams up with promo film-maker Joji Koyama (Woof Wan Bau), director of award-winning promos for Mogwai, Coldcut and Duke Spirit; and several short films including Watermelon Love. Matthew Herbert has thrilled audiences around the world with his off-the-cuff musical style and subversive stance. Anyone who is familiar with his work sampling recipes conjured by Nigella Lawson for the LP Plat Du Jour will know what might be in store.

Next up Alexis Taylor from London and Brian Degraw from New York. Alexis is a musician, songwriter and singer, best known as a member of the pop group, Hot Chip - a band few of us can claim not to be familiar with following their critically acclaimed album The Warning storming the charts. Recently working on a number of side projects most notably with Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, at the ICA we will witness his first first foray into audio-visual experimentation with musician and artist Brian Degraw, founding member of the experimental music group Gang Gang Dance. Brian has exhibited artwork throughout the world and toured extensively with GGD and has also collaborated in the recent past with artists Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, and filmmaker Harmony Korine. We can thus assume that these two guys, no strangers to working in partnerships with others will get nothing short of magical when they work together. Check Brian's Retina Riddim DVD for a hint of this fusions' potential.
Also on the bill is animator and film-maker Max Hattler, a further talent on display at this intriguing evening. Although relatively new to the commercial scene, his personal work is a revelation and Max has promised to pull out all the stops to rise to the occasion at the ICA. His already inspiring work with the band Economy Wolf (he has directed two promos for the band) will come to fruition as both parties perform together live.

Lastly Simon Robson, most known for his work What Barry Says, will be doing something that ties it all together. Watch this space... or better still come down and see for yourself.

Oni-wa Soto! Fuku-wa Uchi! Goodbye Winter! Hallo Spring! Demons Out! Happiness In!

Accidental are proud as punch to tell you all that the eponymous debut from Japanese traditional space funk band, Setsubun Bean Unit, is out this week!
Having conquered Sonar in June, the band have been busy developing their live show which they'll unleash on the UK in an extensive tour later this year. Written by members of Folk outfit Bellowhead, their sound is a heavy amalgam of traditional Japanese bon dance rhythms, dub, electronics and jazz, with the inimitable voice of singer Kamura binding it all together into a heady package, which boomkat described thus : "At times you could almost be forgiven for thinking that Setsubun Bean Unit was a lost progressive jazz LP from the 70s, probably affiliated with Sun Ra or his galactic cohorts, but then it's a little too weird even for that", high praise indeed!

Oni Wa Soto Fuku Wa Uchi!

Accidentals latest signing 'SETSUBUN BEAN UNIT' release their debut album on the 13th August 07.

Born out of a 2005 trip to Tokyo by members of the Farmyard Animals (Gideon Juckes, Brendan Kelly, Pete Flood), sometime Bellowhead compatriots and general intrepid jazz livestock adventurers. Bearing witness to the Japanese festivals of Setsubun (the very lively Spring festival where soya beans are thrown in the air, in order to cast away Demons and bring good luck into the household) and Bon Odori (here, energetic and often bawdy songs are sung over a heavy and hypnotic groove accompanying local folk dancers dressed in Yukata (Summer kimonos), to honour the spirits of dead ancestors), the band decided that this intoxicating amalgam of live bean scattering and heavy dance groove would confound and excite the uninitiated palettes of the West. Thereby combining their jazz, dub and electronic funk with the rhythms and songs of traditional Japanese folk music (played by fellow band members Simon King, Yuki Yamashita, Takuma Kawauchiya and singer Kamura) and driven by the energy of the Bon dancers (Kay Oishi and Akiko Sato), a new sight and sound has been born which is quite unlike anything you’ve heard. Kudoro meets Konono. No. 1 in downtown Tokyo, whilst Miles Davis plays in the background.

100lbs

In January 1996, Matthew Herbert released three EPs that would stand as a personal manifesto for the future of dance music. Wishmountain's "Radio" and Doctor Rockit's "Ready To Rockit" showcased the prolific young Englishman's ambient techno and jazzy electro sides. But it was "Part One", the first in a trilogy of house music release, that best pointed to the musical heights Herbert would climb in the coming decade.

Followed by "Part Two" and "Part Three", this trio of EPs was then collected together into Herbert's debut album, "100 lbs". Now being re-released with additional tracks from the same era, the album puts his subsequent musical growth in context.

An exclusive Mp3 can be downloaded via the 100lbs e-card. simply follow the link HERE.

Re-released through !K7 records.

31st October - International
8th November - UK
23rd January - USA

Heavy!

Moving Like A Train - Out Today (27/07/06)

Matthew Herbert does the locomotion on his latest single, 'Moving like a train' a hyper-funky fusion of supple rythums and sumptuous melodies. Taken from Herbert's highly acclaimed new album, 'Scale', the track bounds effortlessly along on a mighty groove and a mass of contradictions: tight yet elasticated, minimal but opulent, soulfully warm yet clinically exact. This may well be the internationally revered avant-pop professor's most delicious, infectious propulsive creation to date.

Micah - Debut Solo Album Out 3rd July

“Everything” - the debut album produced by Brazilian legend Arto Lindsay and harnessing the creative juices of Micah Gaugh, a Panamanian-born, Texas bred musical genius - channels Tricky, Prince and Cocteau Twins into some utterly original avant-garde R’n’B musical soundscapes. Stark pop songs abound, where Micah’s soulful vocals are spun with electronic sugar and stripped back reggae b-lines, and sweet melodies are undershot with background menace.

The spark that lit “Everything” into a fully-fledged album was Accidental Records boss Matthew Herbert, who met Gaugh while the latter was dry-humping a speaker-stack at the Triptych Festival in Scotland. Herbert was wowed and Micah decided to offer up some of his more accessible tunes – “my avant-pop moments”. As such opening track ‘Constant’ has a gentle, childlike warmth that punctuates the entire album, layers of rich keys and saxophone building and weaving in and out of the half spoken, half sung storytelling. It’s an absorbingly spooky trip where nothing is beyond possibility, and like Matthew Herbert notes; “It's nice to see that whilst the commercial success of modern black music seems to increasingly polish out the soul and iron out the ticks, there's 6ft men in kilts out there ready to push a few buttons and see what happens.”

Soon to be available on CD from the Accidental Shop and all good music shops, as well as MP3 download.

LISTEN NOW

DOWNLOAD

BUY

Micah - 1st Single Out Monday 19th June

The first time Micah Gaugh attempted to programme a beat he was four years old. Except back then, he didn’t want to make tunes, just motorcycle noises. By the age of nine his saxophone teacher Allison Tucker had decided she needed to include him in her biography. It’s a pretty typical anecdote from Micah, a Panama-born, Texas-bred crazy genius who has squeezed the grand sweep of opera, the brevity of pop and the wiggle of the avant-garde into a chunky R&B hotpot. In a kilt…

‘Revelation’ is Micah’s worldly outlook incarnate; a tender love song with dark undertones – more ‘don’t leave me’ than ‘I love you’ but that merely adds to the track’s delicate beauty. It is fittingly remixed by last year’s undisputed don of off the wall soul Jamie Lidell, who’s atmospheric reconstruction revolves around some intricate beatboxing and added layers of vocal harmonies. ‘Stewardess’ provides the brand new B Side with a clattering industrial strength remix from label boss Matthew Herbert.

Out on 12" (Available from all good independent record shops and from the accidental shop)
and Mp3 (from itunes and alike)

Herbert's Hotline

As winter draws in, me and dani are hunkering down recording 2 new records, her new solo record and my new Herbert record. The records are coming out in the spring on k7 records and we will then start touring them together next year from april. Plenty to do til then.

My new record is called SCALE and takes as its starting point, the idea of distance in our lives. For one track I am trying to make a small connection with the potential audience of the album. To this end, we have set up an answer phone at k7 hq. The number there is : +49 32 22 1918 394
If you would like to contribute, please call this number and leave me a sound. Any sound. Preferably not speech or something vocal. Please DON'T say what the sound is or your name, I'm interested in making a piece of music out of noises that I don't know anything about. If you'd like to register your contribution, and name then please email dan@k7.com

Regardless, if you'd like to add a noise to the record, just call up and leave me a sound. Every sound will be used.
You have until december the 11th to do it.

Thank you for your time
Matthew herbert
